The American Phoenix: And Why China and Europe Will Struggle after the Coming Slump (repost)

Charles Dumas, “The American Phoenix: And Why China and Europe Will Struggle after the Coming Slump”
2011 | ISBN 10: 1846685648 | PDF | 224 pages | 3 MB

2012 will bring another global economic crisis. It could have been avoided if America and other deficit countries had embarked on currency devaluation and tighter domestic policy to sustain recovery and growth, boost exports and savings, while cutting excessive debts built up in the pre-crisis ‘gilded age’. But they didn’t. Instead they continued to run large government deficits, effectively transferring debt from private to public hands, rather than reducing it through rising national savings rates.

Savings-rich countries, notably China, have not helped. To get the global economy in better balance they needed to reduce exports by revaluing their currencies and encouraging domestic demand. Instead, the second, third and fourth largest economies in the world have continued to increase their net exports, thwarting recovery in the United States, Britain and southern Europe. This economic imbalance, say Dumas and Choyleva, is going to cause another global economic crunch.

And afterwards? Perhaps surprisingly, but with impeccable reasoning, Dumas and Choyleva go on to argue that America will emerge from the slump in the strongest shape, China will struggle unless it takes steps to tackle its structural problems, Eurozone countries like Spain, Portugal and Greece are in for a depressing decade, while Britain, because of its labour market and exchange rate flexibility, will be in better shape to emulate America’s recovery. These are precarious times. To understand and prepare for them, this book will be invaluable

Witness to War: Diaries of the Second World War in Europe (Repost)

Richard Aldrich, “Witness to War: Diaries of the Second World War in Europe”
English | 2005 | ISBN: 0552151084 | PDF | pages: 923 | 39,9 mb

WITNESS TO WAR is an eye-opening retelling of the war experience through the private diaries kept by people from all walks of life and from many countries. The twentieth century’s Second World War announced its arrival from a distance, and as early as spring 1938 city-dwellers across Europe expected destruction on an epic scale. Men, women and children, most of whom had never kept a diary before, began to chronicle their own responses to what they knew would be a unique moment in world history. The cast of characters represented in these diaries – more than three hundred in number – ranges from politicians, soldiers and spies to ordinary citizens and housewives, from a London schoolboy watching V-1 doodlebugs from his bedroom window to an interned German refugee robbed and beaten by British troops. Many others are famous, and this collection includes rare material from figures such as Joseph Goebbels, Joyce Grenfell, Jean-Paul Sartre, Evelyn Waugh and Noël Coward. It also contains the insights of many who were close to Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. Most of these diaries involved a degree of danger and secrecy. In occupied Europe a captured diary could betray friends and relatives to the enemy. Some were downright illegal, such as those kept by soldiers on the front line. More than half a century after the end of the war, these hidden treasures – the voices of the past – are still being unearthed. Many of these accounts languished unread, unpublished and gathering dust in scholarly archives around the world. Richard Aldrich has devoted two decades to sustained research in more than a dozen countries. This is war at first hand described in the most immediate terms, not mediated through the voice of peripheral observers or shaded by fading memory or political allegiances.

Local Government in Europe: The "Fourth Level" in the EU Multi-Layered System of Governance

Local Government in Europe: The ‘Fourth Level’ in the EU Multi-Layered System of Governance by Carlo Panara and Michael R. Varney
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415580005 | 448 pages | PDF | 2 MB

This work considers the role of local government in 13 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The book aims to provide an account of the system of local government in each of the countries studied along with a critical and contextual approach to the level of autonomy that local government enjoys. The approach is comparative, based on a questionnaire which all of the authors considered. There is then a detailed conclusion to the book which offers a detailed summary and comparative analysis of the responses in order to better consider the role of local authorities as the ‘fourth level’ of governance in the EU. The book aims to offer a detailed introduction to and account of each system of local government which may appeal to those seeking an overview of the area, but also a critical and contextual approach that will be of interest to those actively researching in the areas of local and regional government or EU-central-local government relations. The book contains details of reform in local government up to November 2012, including an analysis of the impact of austerity measures on local autonomy where these have become significant.
