Expand Social Security Now!: How to Ensure Americans Get the Retirement They Deserve

Expand Social Security Now!: How to Ensure Americans Get the Retirement They Deserve by Steven Hill
2016 | ISBN: 0807028436 | English | 192 pages | EPUB | 0.6 MB

Why Social Security is not only sustainable but should be substantially expanded

Social Security is bankrupting us. It’s outdated. It’s a Ponzi scheme. It’s stealing from young people. These are some of the biggest myths and lies about one of the most successful programs in our nation’s history. Three-quarters of Americans depend heavily on Social Security in their elderly years and nearly half would be living in poverty without it. But as important and popular as it is, Social Security has become a political football. A well-financed campaign—supported by conservatives, special interest groups, and even leading Democrats—has lobbied for cuts and significant “entitlement reform,” falsely proclaiming that Social Security is going broke. Policy expert Steven Hill argues that Social Security should not only be defended, it should be substantially expanded. Here he proposes how we can double the monthly benefit and how to pay for it by closing many of the tax loopholes and deductions that disproportionately favor the wealthy few.

Security and Resiliency Analytics for Smart Grids: Static and Dynamic Approaches

Security and Resiliency Analytics for Smart Grids: Static and Dynamic Approaches
Springer | Security & Cryptology | July 11, 2016 | ISBN-10: 3319328700 | 144 pages | pdf | 2.51 mb

Authors: Al-Shaer, Ehab, Rahman, Mohammad Ashiqur

Maximizes reader insights into theoretical and practical aspects of applying formal methods for the protection of critical infrastructures like smart gridsCovers novel techniques which can automatically, provably, and efficiently analyze the security and resiliency of the smart gridsIncludes various illustrative case studies and extensive evaluation results demonstrating the efficacy of the formal techniques

This book targets the key concern of protecting critical infrastructures such as smart grids. It explains various static and dynamic security analysis techniques that can automatically verify smart grid security and resiliency and identify potential attacks in a proactive manner. This book includes three main sections. The first presents the idea of formally verifying the compliance of smart grid configurations with the security and resiliency guidelines. It provides a formal framework that verifies the compliance of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) configurations with the security and resiliency requirements, and generates remediation plans for potential security violations. The second section covers the formal verification of the security and resiliency of smart grid control systems by using a formal model to analyze attack evasions on state estimation, a core control module of the supervisory control system in smart grids. The model identifies attack vectors that can compromise state estimation. This section also covers risk mitigation techniques that synthesize proactive security plans that make such attacks infeasible. The last part of the book discusses the dynamic security analysis for smart grids. It shows that AMI behavior can be modeled using event logs collected at smart collectors, which in turn can be verified using the specification invariants generated from the configurations of the AMI devices. Although the focus of this book is smart grid security and resiliency, the included formal analytics are generic enough to be extended to other cyber-physical systems, especially those related to industrial control systems (ICS). Therefore, industry professionals and academic researchers will find this book an exceptional resource to learn theoretical and practical aspects of applying formal methods for the protection of critical infrastructures.

Rethinking Risk in National Security: Lessons of the Financial Crisis for Risk Management

Rethinking Risk in National Security: Lessons of the Financial Crisis for Risk Management
Palgrave Macmillan US | Risk Management | April 28 2016 | ISBN-10: 1349918415 | 246 pages | pdf | 791 kb

Authors: Mazarr, Michael J.

Presents innovative analysis applying lessons from the 2007-2008 financial crisis to risk management issues in national security
Offers incisive suggestions for improving national security risk strategy
Casts new light on how skewed incentives, cognitive biases, groupthink, and other human factors have led to excessive risk-taking and should be understood with caution

This book examines the role of risk management in the recent financial crisis and applies lessons from there to the national security realm. It rethinks the way risk contributes to strategy, with insights relevant to practitioners and scholars in national security as well as business. Over the past few years, the concept of risk has become one of the most commonly discussed issues in national security planning. And yet the experiences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis demonstrated critical limitations in institutional efforts to control risk. The most elaborate and complex risk procedures could not cure skewed incentives, cognitive biases, groupthink, and a dozen other human factors that led companies to take excessive risk. By embracing risk management, the national security enterprise may be turning to a discipline just as it has been discredited.
